Kids' Corner

Welcome to Wignall Animal Hospital Kids' Corner!  We hope kids will enjoy this page and all its links as an easy, fun way to learn more about pets, veterinary care, caring for your pets at home and much more. Each month we have a new theme with activities, links, articles and videos. And you can always go back to your favorites from other months, whenever you want to, located in the Kids' Corner Archive.

Q: Did you know that veterinarians call a pet a special name once the pet turns 7 years old?

A: Your pet ages faster than you do!  By the time your dog or cat are age 7, they are considered a "Senior".

Q: Is there anything special the veterinarian will do at your Senior Pet's check up?

A: As your pet gets older, things change inside his or her body. The veterinarian will want to have some special tests done to find out if anything is changing.  We call these tests a "Senior Screen".

Q: How could you tell if your Senior Pet might have some changes happening in his or her body?

A: Painful joints can cause your pet to play less; run less; have difficulty getting up on your lap, sitting or standing; lose interest in playing; and sleep more.  With medication, he/she can seem years younger and resume enjoying all of these activities.

Rabies Awareness

Rabies is a disease that affects the brain. It´s usually passed from animal to animal but it can be passed from animals to people. It´s caused by a virus. A virus is a very tiny germ, and you can only see that germ if you have a special microscope.

Any mammal can get rabies. Do you remember what a mammal is? Mammals are warm-blooded animals with fur. We´re mammals, and so are most of our pets like cats and dogs. Lots of farm animals like cows and horses are mammals, and so are wild animals like foxes and skunks. We can all get rabies. Even bats can get rabies!
